The Loose Moose Tap & Grill House / The Roosevelt Lounge, Gold Coast

Quality, Reliability, Usability... All That Jazz

It takes hard work to run a speak-easy, let alone two neighbouring venues that seamlessly juxtapose the flip-sides of the Jazz Age while being two of the most happening nightspots on the Gold Coast.

Not only are you managing waiting lists and capacity crowds, but you’re also sweating the details – making sure the Presidential booth lives up to its name and the whiskey choice ranges from de rigueur Bourbons and Ryes to ‘Ole Smoky Apple Pie Moonshine’.

To provide one consistent vibe is hard enough, but two playing off each other is another matter entirely.

That’s why it’s so important for Shannon Deane, part owner of The Loose Moose Tap & Grill House and its neighbour The Roosevelt Lounge, that he can rely on his bar equipment so he can focus on delivering a unique cocktail of sights, sounds and tastes for his clientele.

“We chose SKOPE because we’ve always had SKOPE from day one and never had an issue. We even have a Backbar series at another venue that I installed more than 11 years ago - and it’s never had an issue.”

The Loose Moose Tap & Grill House in Broadbeach takes the prohibition era of Al Capone and the twenties flapper, and infuses it with a touch of industrial and steam punk.

Forty-four gallon drums hang as light fixtures and industrial piping runs the length of the walls, while guests tuck into blue collar gourmet favourites like locally sourced Cape Byron Black Angus beef burgers.

But just next door you have The Roosevelt Lounge, a sophisticated post-prohibition-themed cocktail lounge and venue that would put Gatsby to shame.

Taking its name from the US president who ended prohibition in December 1933, the lounge at once compliments and contrasts the grill house by providing a hedonistic, pre-financial crash early thirties vibe as strong as the roaring twenties taking place next door.

This yin-yang set up came about when the Gennari Group (which also runs the Koi and Glass dining and lounge bars) bought the spot next door to The Loose Moose just a year after the tap and grill house opened in 2016. It gave two-thirds of the space over to an extension and left the rest for creating The Roosevelt Lounge.

“The reaction has been great. We have a constant waiting list so the additional space was always well needed. We have more freedom to create space, cater to parties and functions, and corporate events – which means a lot when a peak night brings in 1000 to 1500-plus people."

“In this environment a faulty bar fridge is a big deal, it means clients don’t get the quality products they should be getting coming out of the fridge at the cool temperature they expect. It can ruin the experience," Shannon says.

“A good quality product with longevity, something we can rely on without having too many hiccups and queries, is an essential part of the equation.

"However, design is just as important as quality. With a SKOPE fridge it’s easy to use – what you see is what you get – but there are also no encroaching motors inside, which means you can fit three shelves of beer and wine. And with some units you can’t do that because the motors encroach into the shelving space.”

Together, both venues rely on seven SKOPE essentials supplied by approved dealer The Commercial Kitchen Company - three BackBar Series fridges, two BackBar X Series fridges, and two Counterline Non-GN food display/store fridges. All the units boast a two-year warranty and SKOPE quality features like a high ambient rating.

They’re also highly customisable, including a full powder coat colour range to choose from.

“We almost went with gold for The Roosevelt Lounge’s Backbar but our bar top design changed,” Shannon says. “That would have been cool.”

The Loose Moose Tap & Grill House and The Roosevelt Lounge put on enough glitz for the Ritz without needing a gold Backbar. But, needless to say, you never know what the future holds and the option is always there.

“We’re really happy with how things are going, but one thing’s for sure - it’s only going to get bigger and better from here.”

“Choosing SKOPE was about design aesthetics, functionality, and also hygiene. But we also wanted to make sure we chose a product that we could clean easily and was from a brand that had a really fabled reputation founded on reliability.”

- Melbourne

“SKOPE is a very important part of the picture because we need concepts that work on many levels – our venues need to be labour-efficient and maintenance-efficient, and we need the confidence that the equipment we choose can be relied upon.”

- Brisbane

“SKOPE has worked extremely hard to develop their products and the technology that goes into them.”

- Brisbane

“A wine shop wanted to offer deli food like: salami and cheese but didn’t want to buy fridges, in case it wasn’t a good return on investment. They started with renting one Open Deck display fridge which proved to be a hit. They then decided to rent at multiple locations. Knowing that they could simply return at any time if sales didn’t warrant it or move fridges to different locations gave them peace of mind.”

“The Irinox Bakery Day System has enabled us to increase our production to far greater levels, whilst maintaining the high quality of our products, at peak times of the year, such as Christmas.”
