Summary
Condenser fan motors in BackBar X chillers have been experiencing elevated failure rates. SKOPE has investigated and discovered an electrical component within the motor is causing failure during power cycling. To minimise this failure, the motor manufacturer (Unada) has made multiple updates to the motor. The updated motor is now used in all BackBar X integral chillers manufactured from November 2017, and is supplied as the condenser fan motor spare part for BackBar X chillers.
The Motor
The condenser fan motor used in the BackBar X is Unada UC+ (SKOPE part number UE40ABF/404CP1). Over 10,000 of these motors have been used in SKOPE products, and they have demonstrated good reliability in all SKOPE products with the exception of the BackBar X Series. Unlike other SKOPE products that use this motor, the BackBar X cycles the fan on and off with the compressor. To minimise this failure, the fan motor manufacturer has made multiple changes to the fan motor. These changes came into effect in September 2017.
Models Affected
BackBar X Series integral chillers manufactured prior to November 2017 are fitted with the old version of the motor. BackBax X Series integral chillers manufactured from November 2017 are fitted with the updated version.
Spare Parts
All BackBar X spare part motors supplied by SKOPE will be the updated version. When fitting a replacement condenser fan motor to a BackBar X integral chiller, check the motor manufacturing date and ensure the motor was manufactured from September 2017 onwards. The motor manufacturing date can be found in the first 6 digits of the serial number as YYMMDD. For example a serial number starting with 170929 was manufactured on 29/09/2017.
